I once had a boss tell me that I was lazy. She said it straight up, "Q, you are lazy." I was so surprised because I thought that, given the nickname she had given me, (after the wacky inventor character "Q" in all of the 007 movies) she had really liked me and the work I had done for her and our office. Then she followed up with, "Q, laziness is the mother of invention." Aahh. I see. It's true. I am lazy. I am always looking for a faster, easier, more efficient way of doing things. I love the three-E mantra: efficiency, economy, effectiveness that we studied in my Master's program courses. I was always showing that old boss shortcuts on her computer and trying to tweak systems to make them run better and more easily. So, fast forward several years to now. I have a job that I really love, but I am lazy and I have gradually come to a realization. This job of mothering cannot be reinvented, streamlined, paired-down, or shortened to a couple of key-strokes. It is the same job that it was a thousand years ago. It is inefficient, uneconomical, and totally impossible to determine its effectiveness. I have had at least a dozen different jobs, some really tough ones, and seriously it is the hardest job I've ever had. No performance reviews, (unless you count a purple-faced melt down a performance review) no raises, no accolades, no certificates on the wall. Do I miss those things? Yeah, some days. I'm really proud of my past and my accomplishments but I am more proud of my babies, and my home, and my family. I think I will keep this job for a while.

I really like these thoughts. In my constant, every day, nagging struggle to determine what I should do job-wise once the baby comes and I'm grateful to be reminded that although motherhood isn't a paying job accompanied with promotions and acknowledgements, it's most definitely a rewarding job.
Hey--I recognize that blanket!!!!!
haha. What a cute, sweet post! And I totally agree. I often say that I'm lazy...or trying to find the most efficient route possible. I think you're doing a great job at being a "lazy" mom :)
